Up your system memory to 512 at least. Win XP is some what of a memory hog and if you don't have a dedicated video card with its own memory, then your system has to share what you already have. Check with your PC vendor if you don't know what type of memory your system will take or how much. Shoot for 1 Gig if you can.

Increase your memory. With Windows XP, you should have a minimum of 512M of RAM. The problem you are experiencing is that as you computer opens and closes files, there are applications that write to memory and even though you close the application, it stays resident in the memory. This is called a TSR (terminate stay resident) and when the application module stays in memory, it keeps other programs from being able to access that block of memory. Think of it as items in a box. The empty box has available space until you start putting things in it. After putting items in, you close the box, but the items stay in it. You go to add other items that fit in the box before but now, since there are things in the box, all of those items no longer fit.

Increase your memory to at least 512 then run a defrag on the hard drive.
